Putting Your Pet to Sleep

The Riverside Veterinary Team appreciates how difficult it can be to even start thinking about putting your pet to sleep, it can and will be a very emotional and difficult time. We understand it is like losing a human friend or family member and hope that we can provide guidance for when euthanasia (putting a pet to sleep) needs to be considered.

In certain situations, our veterinary team may have to advise that your pet is unlikely to make a full recovery or is in too much pain. At that time it is one of the most difficult decisions you will ever make as a pet owner, but it really is the kindest thing to do and we are here to help you and your pet through this final stage of their life.

Each situation is unique to the individual pet and each owner's circumstances and feelings and we appreciate that when you call us there have been many conversations at home already. Our hope is that having known you and your pet for a long time, or sometimes only a short time, we can be a sympathetic ear that listens to your wishes and help make the end of life decision as comfortable as it can be. We understand the need for a quiet time and can also arrange for this. Some owners wish to stay with their pet whilst put to sleep, whilst some may not, but rest assured that we will always ensure your pet is comfortable and treated with care and dignity.

Please telephone or call in to discuss things through with us, we will make sure that you are fully informed about what will happen and ensure your pet is given the best possible care.

What Happens After Euthanasia?

There are options to consider afterwards, including burying your pet at home or alternatively we can arrange a cremation. An individual cremation can be arranged if you wish and you may also like to choose to have your pet's ashes returned, either in a casket or an urn or for scattering.

We have worked closely with Pet Cremation Services for over 20 years, so are more than happy to answer any questions that you may have or alternatively we can provide you with their brochure.

Please take your time when making a decision, as we understand it can be an emotional time when losing your beloved pet.

The Grieving Process

Everyone deals with the loss of a pet in different ways, but it is important to remember that it will take time to come to terms with your loss. It may be helpful to chat to someone, friends and family, and our Nurses are always here to provide support, or you could contact the Blue Cross Free Helpline.

Waiting Area

During lockdown we introduced outside or in-car waiting and have seen that your pets seem a lot happier than being in a busy waiting room, therefore we are continuing with our outside or in the car waiting areas for the foreseeable future.

We can see everyone arrive and will come and get you when it’s your pet’s appointment.

Collections

If you’re coming to us to collect medication, food, etc, please come in. We very much appreciate you continuing to call ahead with your orders 01789 299455, this way we can have everything ready for you.
